DONATE TODAY

We are a nonprofit that raises money to ensure the grfd's fire prevention programs are always available to the community through consistent funding.

Why are the fire prevention programs not consistently funded?

The GRFD relies on the city of Grand Rapids as well as various grants to support its operations. There is a perpetual challenge in allocating sufficient funds for effective emergency response as well as funding all their programs including fire prevention. Despite the importance of these programs, competing priorities sometimes limit their full financial support. Asa result, the department continually strives to balance its resources but with emergency response being the clear priority, the fire prevention programs are regularly not fully funded.

How can we solve this?

Recognizing the vital importance of fire prevention programs even during lean budgetary periods, this foundation was established to ensure sustained funding. Through donations, the foundation rallies public and private support to fill the gap left by limited government and grant funding. Support of the foundation reflects a shared commitment to safeguard lives and property through proactive fire prevention efforts, demonstrating the power of collective action in building safer communities.

How much do we need?

The fire prevention programs come with an annual cost of around $400,000. Over the last several years, grants have covered roughly half of the cost of these programs. The Foundation’s goal is to raise $200,000 per year to make up the difference so all the programs are fully funded and consistently offered.

Community education

Education is the most proactive form of fire prevention. The GRFD has a several programs that focus on education. All programs try to be as engaging and interactive as possible to further connect with the community and make it memorable.

saving lives

The greatest impact we will ever have is saving a life. We already have stories of people’s lives being saved due to the GRFD’s free smoke detector and installation program.

firefighter safety

When families are informed in advance of how to exit their home during afire, it’s much safer for
firefighters because they don’t have to search a fully burning house.

PROPERTY PRESERVATION

A fire destroying a home is distressing and destabilizing for families. Detecting fires early and saving property minimizes displacement and disruption. Our main goal is fire prevention, but our efforts also lessen the impact of fires that do happen. Saving a house with minimal fire damage is much more time and cost effective than a total loss.
